THE THURSDAY GROUP PRESENT
'COMMUNE: A GOTHIC ECO-OPERA'

COMMUNE: A GOTHIC ECO OPERA
COMMUNE: A Gothic Eco Opera is a multi-artform performance work created and directed by Alex Clouston, through Melbourne experimental music project The Omega Point, in collaboration with psychophysical theatre ensemble The Thursday Group. Combining quadraphonic electronic sound, a kinetic choir that moves as one body, immersive physical theatre, original costume design, and video works — COMMUNE takes audiences on a ritualistic journey from the dawn of time into a speculative post-apocalyptic future. A meditation on ecological collapse, technological acceleration, utopia and its failures, and what it means to be human.
COMMUNE is simultaneously a live performance, a vinyl audio release (Commune I & II), and a series of short films — each released as a chapter in an unfolding world. The original 2022 show saw a sold-out run supported by City of Melbourne Arts Grants. We are currently in active weekly development with The Thursday Group, working toward a full 2027 presentation.
THE OMEGA POINT?
THE OMEGA POINT (Naarm) — Part ritual, part musical performance. The Omega Point is the project of artist, director and performer Alex Clouston, weaving intense dirge-like harmonies and ethereal soundscapes across influences ranging from Gregorian chant to psychedelic rock, electronica and industrial music. Performing from solo to collective, most frequently with core collaborators Mark Conroy and Alex O'Connell, The Omega Point creates what they call eco-requiems — embodied, experimental works at the intersection of music, ritual and ecology. The Omega Point recently completed a European tour performing at Sameheads (Berlin), The Horse Hospital (London), Le Chaton Independent (Paris), PDF (Vienna) and Dragu Vardai (Vilnius).

THE WORLD OF COMMUNE

COMMUNE IS AN A/V WORLD
COMMUNE is structured as a series of thematic chapters — each one its own atmospheric world, with choreography, text, music and lighting design built around a specific theme. From the birth of the universe to societal collapse, corporate alienation, liberation, and the imagining of a post-apocalyptic commune — the chapters unfold across theatrical performance, short film, vinyl release, and visual works.
