'COMMUNE: A GOTHIC ECO-OPERA'
COMMUNE: A Gothic Eco Opera is a multi-artform performance work created and directed by Alex Clouston, featuring Melbourne experimental music project The Omega Point, in collaboration with psychophysical theatre ensemble The Thursday Group. Combining electro-acoustic music, immersive physical theatre, original costume design by Merri-bek designer Interstellar, and video works, COMMUNE is a meditation on ecological collapse, technological acceleration, utopia and its failures, and what it means to be human.
A 90-minute immersive music and theatre performance.
COMMUNE begins as performers invite the audience into a post-apocalyptic commune. The foyer and building exterior will be activated with photographs of the COMMUNE world printed on material (with photographer Wen Miao Xin), with the trappings of a sacred event - smell, haze, robes, dim light. Seated around the Commune leaders, feeling like commune members themselves, the audience witnesses a mythic retelling of their ‘ancestors’ - a play within a play that soon looks all too familiar, as commune members transform into archetypes of our catastrophic times.
COMMUNE takes audiences on a ritualistic journey from the dawn of time into a speculative post-apocalyptic future - a meditation on ecological collapse, technological acceleration, questioning ‘utopia’, and what it means to be human. The performance unfolds as thematic chapters, each its own atmospheric world with accompanying songs, guiding audiences from the birth of the universe to corporate alienation (within a company called COMMUNE Inc.), rebellion, societal collapse, and a post-apocalyptic commune.
THE OMEGA POINT?
Part ritual, part musical performance. The Omega Point is the project of artist, director and performer Alex Clouston, weaving intense dirge-like harmonies and ethereal soundscapes across influences ranging from Gregorian chant to psychedelic rock, electronica and industrial music. Performing from solo to collective, most frequently with core collaborators Mark Conroy and Alex O'Connell, The Omega Point creates what they call eco-requiems - embodied, experimental works at the intersection of music, ritual and ecology. They received air play or participated in interviews on FBI Sydney, RRR, Syn, Pbs and 3CR Melbourne.

THE THURSDAY GROUP
A Melbourne-based theatre ensemble working in a psychophysical approach to co-devised performance-making and drama education.
Led by Artistic Director Tessa Marie Luminati, The Thursday Group create performances that combine rigorous technique and intense physical discipline with politically charged narratives and adaptations. They also facilitate weekly actor training sessions in North Melbourne to support emerging talent and community participation in the arts.
The ensemble’s practice draws on Suzuki Method of Actor Training, Grotowski, and original devising methodologies, developing the ability to move as one ensemble body, sustain physical and vocal rigour, and create works of archetypal, archaic depth in a theatre laboratory setting.
